For This Generation It’s A Blurry Line

Have you seen your kids’ outfit choices lately? The new generation of boys & girls is a generation that’s more and more chosen to ignore the signs that point to “women’s” or “men’s” wear.

While some of you may still be getting used to the man bag, (which is so prevalent now that if you’re still hung up on that…you really should get with it) the younger generation is ripe with men trying on skirts and tights, girls in combat boots and mens pants, and every mix in between

It Only Makes Sense

It’s been roughly a decade now since Louis Vuitton handbags (not to mention Gucci, YSL and a ton of other designers) have made a push into the men’s bag area, it’s been about 5 years since Snoop Doggy Dogg was the toast of L.A with his Speedy 30, and it’s been 30 or 40 years since gender apparently didn’t matter anymore. Who cares about mens or womens? While our generation (and by “our” I mean the “parentals” like myself) likes this idea, our children’s generation just does without thinking.

It’s More Than Man Bags, Boys

Just about every man in the city (OK so maybe in the country these things move a little slower) has a man bag by now…most wear them everywhere. The briefcase is too formal, and a backpack is too first year university—so it’s only natural. Most Louis Vuitton replica sites have an entire section dedicated to men’s handbags.

What’s got me, more than the purse thing though is the pants, the tights, the cross-gendered hair styles, the head wraps, the droopy bottomed jeans on girls, the pink, purple and pastel colors on men, young men dressed in long droopy shirts pulled tight at the waist with tight pants—these are some serious transgressions to tradition. Personally, I love it. I’m just having a hard time keeping up.

Fashion Designers Getting With the Times

Many designers these days are throwing around terms like “gender fluidity”. The percentage of collections that are unisex or “gender bending” is skyrocketing, the idea that it has to be one or the other…plummeting. Brands like American Apparel and Urban Outfitters are bringing it into the mainstream with hundreds of styles for either sex.

While it’s an idea that’s been around forever (Think Chanel and dressing women in men’s clothes as early as the 40′s, or Christian Dior doing the same) it’s never been so natural for kids to just up and dress how they feel, feminine or masculine. While my kids don’t yet dress themselves, I’m beginning to wonder how they will when they get there…

Anyone have any stories to share about their children dressing across the aisle?
